Ellos - UK Leg 2: Goteborg - Varberg 20/9/23 59NM
Donald and Julia joined us mid afternoon on Monday 18th September and over lunch we discussed the voyage we were about to undertake. We had planned to set sail the following day, but the forecast was 30kts plus from the SSW which was exactly where we needed to go, so the first decision was not to go!
This had, of course, the advantage of removing any risk from a serious dinner with oysters and mussels and provided an excuse for a lengthy vist to the Goteburg Museum of Art the next day. On Monday night we returned to the boat to find our cockpit locker wide open in the pouring rain, and the boat covered in filthy footprints where an opportunist had tried to get in. Padlocks were purchased first thing on Tuesday and we had supper onboard that evening to be extra careful. Lila Bommen may well be in the centre of town but it is wide open, which brings other risks. Lesson learned!
The forcast for the Wednesday was better with 20 - 23kts forecast from the west so we set off for Varberg expecting a reasonable sail but a nasty slop left over from the previous day. The 23kts was optimistic, it rarely dropped down there, and so was West as a heading. We spent most of the day on our ear, being bounced in 25 plus kts. One advantage of this was that we discovered Atom hates being overpowered. More reefs may cost a little boat speed but the leeway benefit is enormous.
No sailing photos of this day unfortunately. It was wet, cold and utterly miserable. After a very hairy downhill surf through the harbour entrance, which is not wide enough to go through if a ship is coming the other way, we tied up in Varberg in the early evening in the Innerhamm which is fabulously sheltered and lined by enormous white painted tyres. It also has facilities of Ikea showroom quality and cost under £20 for the night!
Our stay in Varberg was unexpectedly extended by a day. The following morning we set off for Denmark and after a few miles concluded that the previous day's wind had stretched the new rig enough that we were better to turn around and sort it in Sweden than to continue. A call to HR and a Selden rigger was found who we swung around in the dark whilst he tuned the rig. Very trusting indeed!
Varberg is a fabulous summer town and if it had not been blowing a hoolie we would have gone swimming from their harbour bathing platform...honest!
